Artist Bio
Mary Jo Mitchell’s work is a celebration of the sea. It’s about revitalization, where the ebb and flow of the tide bring new life, color and energy.
Even as a child, Mary Jo loved making art. She has vivid memories of painting while listening to John Coltrane in Mr. Baldacci’s art room as a Swampscott High School student. She received the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Award Blue Ribbon prize, awarded to a select few of the top high school artists in the state.
After graduating from Providence College majoring in studio art and marketing, Mary Jo’s creative pursuits shifted. She worked in New York City and Princeton as a graphic design director for several years. While in New York, she designed the Voss Water logo and co-created the award-winning bottle design. Mary Jo was once described as “irreplaceable” by renowned architect and designer Michael Graves.
But the nagging voice inside kept telling her to come back to the ocean and paint. Mary Jo is back in her hometown of Nahant with her husband and two sons, joyfully making art for beach houses and for people who love the sea. Her work includes oil and acrylic paintings of large-scale lobsters and nautical themes. Her art can be found in homes and businesses in the United States and abroad.
